Casal di Principe is a comune in the Province of Caserta in the Italian region of Campania, located about 25 km northwest of Naples and about 20 km southwest of Caserta. It has a population of approximately 21.000 people. The town is located on the territory of Agro aversano - a rural area with 19 comunes spread on its land, and is directly linked to the comune of San Cipriano d'Aversa.Casal di Principe is the hometown of the most dangerous clan of the Camorra -the Casalesi clan, headed by Francesco Schiavone, known as Sandokan, who was born there. The clan has a strong control over the economic and political life of the town. The city council has been suspended three times, because of mafia infiltrations in the administration. During the mid 1990's Casal di Principe counted the highest rate of homicides in Europe. It is regarded as the most dangerous town in Italy, although similar can be found in the regions of Calabria and Sicily too.Casal di Principe is also famous for the production of buffalo mozzarella, which is exported worldwide.
