More than 2000 daily connections link Milan to its hinterland, nearby towns and also two Swiss cities: Chiasso and Bellinzona. Everyday, hundreds of thousands of people commute thanks to Lombardy railways, from those getting from Milan to Chiasso to the ones reaching the Italian economic capital from Rho or other industrial towns in the surrounding area. However, Trenord has a pretty widespread network even towards the region touristic areas: if you want to explore nearby old towns or go on a getaway to the Lombardy lakes, a train is certainly the best way to get from Milan to Como or to reach your destination. Lombardy railways are divided into regional routes - very widespread and served by lower frequency trains (every one or two hours) - and suburban routes, with trains every 30 minutes that connect the region capital to the main cities nearby.

Train schedule
Trenord trains are scheduled very frequently, as that the routes are mainly used by commuters. This means that during peak hours (that is to say from Monday to Friday from 7 to 9:30 am and from 05:30 to 07:30 pm) there are many more people onboard. If you need to get from Milan to Bergamo, you’ll find up to one train every 20 minutes from 05:35 in the morning until 11:40pm. If you want to go from Milan to Como for a walk alongside the lake instead, the first direct train is at 07:10 am and you will get to your destination in 36 minutes, while the last one leaves at 08:10pm. The same route take commuters to Chiasso as well though, the Swiss town just 5 minutes by train from Como.

What kind of trains can I expect with Trenord?
Trenord trains are regional trains and as a consequence you will find toilets and sockets but not restaurants or other services. On international routes such as the ones to Swiss towns you can also find Eurocity trains, slightly more spacious but with the same services of regional ones.
Even though you can find the essential amenities on Trenord trains, the company cares about its customers and offers all the services a commuter would need.
Pets on the train
Trenord lets you travel with your dog, cat or small pet if they are inside a kennel of max 70x30x50 cm. If your dog is small or large sized, you will have to buy a half price ticket for them (if the route is within the metropolitan area, the tickets is the same as for the public transport). You aren’t allowed to bring your pet with you on board during peak hours though, unless it is a guide dog. Guide dogs in fact can travel whenever it is necessary and for free.
Luggage
Trenord has no restrictions on the number of pieces of baggage you can travel with, but each suitcase can’t be bigger than 80x110x40 cm and it must be placed in the racks or wherever it doesn’t annoy others. Strollers must be folded or have their wheels blocked.
Bikes on board
On many trains it is possible to carry a bicycle on board. Trains specifically labeled let you get in even though your bike is not foldable at a cost of € 3. If you can fold it and put it in a bag no bigger than 80x110x0 cm it will be considered as luggage, therefore no surcharge is requested and you can get on all trains. Finally, you can actually bring your bike with you even on trains that doesn’t show the specific label, but there is a limit of 5 bikes per coach so you won’t be sure if you’re allowed to until you see if there’s enough space.
Seats and assistance for the disabled
Trenord trains have specific seats for reduced mobility passengers. The availability is limited, that’s why it’s highly recommended to contact the company at least 2 days before the departure (everyday via the call center or during workdays via email). That way, the company will find the best solution to help you get in and off the train; in case it can’t guarantee this service, Trenord promises to reply via email within 24 hours from the request. If you don’t request assistance but need it, the staff will do as much as possible to help. If living in Lombardy or by having Trenitalia Carta Blu, then, disabled people can also have some price reductions on tickets.
Trenord accepts both printed and e-tickets. In the first case, you must validate it and it is valid for a single ride in each of the directions. Once validated, the ticket is valid for 3 hours if the route is less than 50 km long, 6 hours if it is between 51 and 200 km or 24 hours in case it’s longer than 200 km. The e-ticket instead doesn’t need to be validated: it is only valid for the route and the direction written on it and for departures within 4 hours from the hour indicated on the ticket.
For young travelers
Children under 4 travel for free on Trenord trains, while those between 4 and 14 years old pay half the price of the ticket. Of course, they must prove their age by showing their identity card.
Reductions for elderly people
Women older than 60 years old and men older than 65 have a 20% discount off the ordinary Trenord ticket. Also in this case they must show their identity card when requested in order to let the controller check their age.
Buying your Trenord train tickets online
As mentioned before, Trenord accepts printed tickets and e-tickets. You can buy Trenord tickets online either on the company website or via online travel agencies like Wanderio. The main advantage of using Wanderio is that, apart from checking the train schedule, you can compare trains to buses or transfers. Once chosen how to get to your destination, you will receive a confirmation email. If you opted for traveling with Trenord, you can find your e-ticket directly from the Wanderio App for iOS as well, in the “My Trips” sections.
