Getting to Rome city center from the airport

It’s your first time in Rome and you don’t know how to reach the city center from one of its two airports, isn’t it? No problem, whether you land at Fiumicino or Ciampino, getting right to the heart of the capital is definitely easy! Just enjoy the beauty of the Eternal City, from the Coliseum to the Imperial Fora, from the baths of Caracalla to Largo di Torre Argentina. Traveling for business? Reaching the Exhibition Center, the New Congress Center in EUR created by Fuksas or one of the many business hotels will be easy, either with the public transport or by taxi or private transfer.

Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci: the main airport

The biggest airport of Rome (and one of the most crowded of Europe) is about 30 km away from the city center towards South-West. Airlines such as Alitalia, British Airways, Air France or KLM operate daily here; at this airport, not only are there domestic flights, but also international flights, from short to long-haul ones. If you’re flying from Rome to Tokyo or getting to the capital from Milan, you will land at Fiumicino. Once here, you have different options for reaching the city center.

By train
You can take a regional train from Fiumicino airport to Rome Tiburtina on the line to Fara Sabina or Orte that will take you to destination in approximately 40 minutes passing from Parco Leonardo shopping center, which is great if you’re a shopping addict, Rome exhibition center (perfect for those on a business travel) or Trastevere, for letting you lose yourself in the most authentic neighborhood of Rome. The ticket, wherever you get off the train, is € 8 and there are frequent routes every day (a train every 15 minutes during peak hours and workdays and every 30 minutes during Sundays and public holidays). The first available train is at 05:57 am, while the last leaves at 10:42 pm. An alternative by train is the Leonardo Express, a direct train with no stops that leads you to Termini Station, the central hub of the city, in just 32 minutes. Tickets are a bit more expensive (€ 14 for adults), but the service is guaranteed even in case of a strike and you can find departures every 15 or 30 minutes from 06:23 am to 11:23 pm.

By bus
You can get from Fiumicino airport to Rome by shuttle bus thanks to Terravision, SIT, T.A.M., Cotral and Atral. Terravision is the cheapest provider – a ticket costs just € 4 and you can get to Termini station in less than one hour. There are departures every 20 minutes from 05:35 until 11 pm. SIT bus shuttle offers buses from 8:30 am to 12:30 am at € 6 that stop by the town of Fiumicino, via Aurelia (in the North-East part of Rome) and the Vatican, apart from Termini station. T.A.M. lets you get either at Ostiense station or at Termini and its buses leave every 45 minutes approximately from 05:15 am to 11 pm. Both T.A.M. and SIT offer free wi-fi connection on board. You can also find Atral coaches (Rome Airport Bus) that get you get to the city center for € 5.90 thanks to frequent departures (every 30 or 60 minutes) from 06:05 am to 09:30 pm. Finally, Cotral, the public regional bus provider, has some buses available as well, at 02:15 am, at 5 am, at 10:55 am, at 03:30 pm and at 07:05 pm.

Ciampino Pastine: the low-cost airport

The second airport of the city, Ciampino, is in the South-East area about 14 km away from the center. This is mainly used by Ryanair (even though there is WIzzAir as well), so it’s definitely the low-cost airport. Thinking of flying from Rome to London (and back) at super cheap fares? By train
There’s no direct train that takes you from this airport to Rome. You can get a bus from here to the town of Ciampino (just 5 minutes away) and then change with a regional train, for which you can find departures every 15 minutes. Tickets for Cotral or Atral shuttle buses are € 1 or € 1.2 respectively, while train tickets are € 1.5.

By bus
Getting to Rome city center from Ciampino airport by bus is definitely straightforward. Terravision has departures approximately every 30 minutes to Termini station from 8:15 am to 12:15 am and tickets are € 4; alternatively, you can use SIT buses, that leave from 7:45 am to 11:59 pm (tickets are € 5 in this case). Rome Airport Bus shuttles leave every 60 minutes (there are buses from 4 am to 10:50 pm) and their last stop is at Termini station as well; this provider offers tickets at € 4.90.
